What Will Tiznow and Peppers Pride Produce?New Mexico's Record Win Track Star Is Settled In As BroodmareMay 12, 2009 BarbaraAnne Helberg
Although male and female Thoroughbred track stars don't always reproduce themselves, there is much anticipation for good results from mating Tiznow and Peppers Pride.
Lucky stars did not shine on the star mating of 1973 Triple Crown champion Secretariat and 1980 Kentucky Derby-winning filly Genuine Risk. The coupling of two more recent track celebrities, 2000 Horse of the Year Tiznow and New Mexico's undefeated, record-smashing Peppers Pride, is perhaps as much anticipated as that of Secretariat and Genuine Risk. Peppers Pride and Tiznow Track PhenomsPeppers Pride was retired last year after galloping to a world record nineteen straight wins from nineteen career starts, all in New Mexico. She smashed the North American consecutive victory mark when she captured her seventeenth successive triumph. Booked to the 2000 HOY, Peppers Pride was vanned to Kentucky in March in preparation for what her owner hopes will be an outstanding breeding career. A daughter of Desert God--Lady Pepper, by Chili Pepper Pie, the six-year-old mare was bred in New Mexico by owner Joe Allen. Peppers Pride traveled from New Mexico to Richland Hills Farm near Midway, Kentucky via a van driven by Allen and his colleague, Ray Ashford. The Richland farm is owned by Nathan Fox. Trainer Joel Marr conditioned Peppers Pride through her record victory string that surpassed the sixteen consecutive-win streak of greats Citation (1948 Triple Crown champion) and two-time Horse of the Year Cigar (1995-1996), and track stars Mr. Frisky and Hallowed Dreams. Tiznow won the Breeders' Cup Classic in successive years (2000-2001), the only Thoroughbred to accomplish that feat. In April, Tiznow was elected to join his fellow greats in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. He ranks twelfth on the all time career money earnings list, having bankrolled $6,427,830 in track purses from a career mark of eight wins, four seconds and two thirds off fifteen starts. Tiznow stands at WinStar Farm. Tiznow Short PedigreeThe bay champion Tiznow was foaled in 1997, an offspring of Cee's Tizzy--Cee's Song, by Relaunch. Relaunch was sired by In Reality--Foggy Note. Relaunch's mate, Tizly, was sired by Lyphard--Tizna. Cee's Song was sired by Seattle Song--Lonely Dancer. Seattle Song was by Seattle Slew--Incantation. Lonely Dancer was sired by Nice Dancer and out of Sleep Lonely. Peppers Pride's Win Streak
At win number 18, Peppers Pride tied the international consecutive win record established in 2007 by Silent Witness, a Hong Kong racer. In her four years on the track, unbeaten Peppers Pride earned $1,066,085. Allen Treasures Cigar PictureAllen owns twenty broodmares, most of them boarded at A & A Ranch near Anthony, New Mexico, where he also stands Peppers Pride's sire. Reporting that he prizes a scrapbook picture of himself with the brilliant Cigar, Allen refuses to compare Peppers Pride to the living legend who first tied Citation's sixteen straight win mark in 1996. Allen had the picture taken last year at Cigar's home at the Kentucky Horse Park near Lexington. The horseman was in Lexington as an honoree. He received the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association's New Mexico Breeder of the Year award.
